In my alerts today, I got this article from Babyfit.com all about the benefits of eating together as a family.
The main points are as follows:
- Communication and well-being
- family bonding
- information sharing
- talking!
- Manners
- learn table manners
- lead by example and not chastisement
- Expand their world, food-wise
- opportunity to gradually introduce new foods
- good for experimenting
- Nourish
- home cooked meals are more nutritious and healthy
- usually contain fresher ingrediants and more fruit and vegetables
- Encourage self-sufficiency
- children learn basic meal preparation skills
- Prevent destructive behaviours
- research shows lower rates of smoking, drug abuse etc if eating together (Yeah, we never smoke at the table!)
- Improve grades
- higher academic performance
- do better and more disciplined
- Save money
- meals purchased outside the home cost 2 to 4 times more than home-produced food
We usually all sit together for our evening meal, although it can be a bit tricky with the timing….sometimes I am just not ready to eat at 6pm. But we always have breakfast together and we all seem to enjoy it.
Mind you, we only have Brownies and Tae Kwon Do as activities at the moment. I’m sure, once we get into Cub Scouts, football practise and anything else that comes our way, we’ll be eating dinner in the car as I taxi everyone to and fro!

very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
