Tinned Tomatoes Are Flying Off The Shelves

17 10 2008

In this post a few days ago, I mentioned that families may be resorting to eating and cooking more frugally with the Credit Crunch in full swing.

Seems I spoke too soon, according to this article, in The Telegraph today. There has been a run on tinned tomatoes in the supermarkets, as people cut down on their food bills by making their own meals and not relying on ready-meals.

Spag bol anyone?

Jam is good for you!

14 10 2008

In this article, out yesterday, it is claimed that jam can help to curb the process of cancer.

Apparantly, the pectin found in jam causes the cancer cells to ‘commit suicide’ (apoptosis), thus reducing tumours, up to 40% in some instances.

However, the sugar content is still a cause for concern and it is recommended to stick to the daily allowance of a few dollops a day.

So unless you take the pectin supplement available at health stores, I’m not sure what use it is.

Credit Crunch Cuisine

13 10 2008

Well, it looks as if we’re all feeling the pinch now and the supermarkets have been quick off the mark in responding.

I can’t imagine getting by on £32.68 a week as has been suggested by Sainsbury and their ‘Value range’….if it is possible, it makes me wonder what on Earth I’ve been doing wrong all this time!

Maybe next time I go shopping, I’ll limit myself to the equivalent in euros and see how far through the week we get before I’m Old Mother Hubbard.

Will be interesting to see if our eating habits become healthier as our purses get lighter….I remember reading once that the nation was at it’s healthiest during the rationing years. I, for one, hope it doesn’t get to that! It’s bad enough hearing Grandad reminisce about it, let alone do it!

How Active Are Your Kids?

9 09 2008

I had a little chuckle to myself when I read this report today, about the exercise levels of the average child.

The study details that parents had to complete a questionnaire, outlining how ‘vigorously active’ they thought their child was on a daily basis.

Turns out that the parents are grossly overestimating this activity…Mum and Dad reckon at least 146 minutes per day….it turns out to be more like 24 minutes on average. A huge discrepancy!

I know when I think of my two children: in, out, up, down, running around, screaming, shouting, jumping, skipping, swimming, cycling….it certainly appears as if they are full of energy and on the go….constantly. I often wonder to myself, how do they keep it up?

Looks as if I would have flunked the test too!

Kids and Body Image

10 05 2007

I read this article some time ago and promptly left it in my Favourites. I re-read it again today and decided I needed to put it into Blog de la Bouffe.

It’s reassuring to know that I am not the only parent battling with a beautiful and ever changing/growing/maturing daughter. It is easy to become defeatist about the whole thing; Are we just fighting a losing battle? But the few pointers at the end, I thought, were really practical and simple.

So, now we only refer to our bodies in a positive way. (It is hard to do and many a-time I have had to ’shush’ well meaning auntys and uncles!) We talk not about ‘fat’ and ‘thin’ people but whether they look healthy or not. We have long and meaningful conversations about nutrition. We have incorporated more physical activity into our lives.

So, watch this wasteline!

How much do you throw away?

17 03 2007

About one third of our food ends up in the bin according to a recent study.

This doesn’t really surprise me very much, if our household is ‘normal’.

When I was doing a ‘big’ shop, once a fortnight and topping up in between, I seem to remember throwing away vegetables in the salad tray, to make way for the new stuff. I would do this week in week out, for some strange reason. It obviously hadn’t occurred to me to actually try something novel, like cook with them! The items being thrown away were simply replaced by fresher items. Now I think about it, it seems really odd behaviour.

I shop every few days now and although I feel as if I am spending more….I can go in for a loaf of bread and end up spending £20, at least the food is being used and eaten. And it’s fresher…I find it a bit odd that some of the vegetables I would throw out had been in there for a fortnight, and still looked as fresh as the day I had bought them.

And then there is the wastage that children produce. We are still in the ‘no crust’ stage, and only eating a tiny amount of what I serve up, the rest goes in the bin. I refuse to be a mother-food-vaccuum-cleaner hybrid and eat what’s left on the plate…just as well, or I’d be unable to fit through any doors!

I told my Dad about this food wastage and he was genuinely shocked. He couldn’t understand it, plain and simple. Being a ‘child of the War’, I guess he sees food in a whole different way. He tells his Grandchildren of the first orange he tasted after the War, how he had never seen a banana and just how many sweets he was rationed with. My two can’t believe it!

And then there are the starving millions, who could live for a month on the stuff we chuck out every day.

It’s all gone wrong somewhere!

True Colours

23 02 2007

In my post Distortion, I was talking about the difficult dilemma faced by parents in the quest to raise healthy, well-adjusted children and in particular, daughters.

In the comment section Matt C mentioned the Dove commercial that explores our daughters’ and their self-esteem. I personally find it really moving.

Take a look here…

The benefits of eating together as a family

19 02 2007

In my alerts today, I got this article from Babyfit.com all about the benefits of eating together as a family.

The main points are as follows:

  1. Communication and well-being
    1. family bonding
    2. information sharing
    3. talking!
  2. Manners
    1. learn table manners
    2. lead by example and not chastisement
  3. Expand their world, food-wise
    1. opportunity to gradually introduce new foods
    2. good for experimenting
  4. Nourish
    1. home cooked meals are more nutritious and healthy
    2. usually contain  fresher ingrediants and more fruit and vegetables
  5. Encourage self-sufficiency
    1. children learn basic meal preparation skills
  6. Prevent destructive behaviours
    1. research shows lower rates of smoking, drug abuse etc if eating together (Yeah, we never smoke at the table!)
  7. Improve grades
    1. higher academic performance
    2. do better and more disciplined
  8. Save money
    1. meals purchased outside the home cost 2 to 4 times more than home-produced food

We usually all sit together for our evening meal, although it can be a bit tricky with the timing….sometimes I am just not ready to eat at 6pm. But we always have breakfast together and we all seem to enjoy it.

Mind you, we only have Brownies and Tae Kwon Do as  activities at the moment. I’m sure, once we get into  Cub Scouts, football practise and anything else that comes our way, we’ll be eating dinner in the car as I taxi everyone to and fro!

Food labelling making us more confused…

17 02 2007

According to a report out this week, consumers are even more confused by the new food labelling and are actively being misled by the information on the labels. The same information that is supposed to be making our choices easier and more informed.

But, it’s not working! What a surprise!

It would appear that rather than give us a clearer picture as to the products’ health and nutritional value, the values are being manipulated to make the product appear healthier than they really are.

Is that not just lying?

I suppose it is difficult for the manufacturers to make it too easy….that way we would be able to see at a quick glance just how bad the food they are trying to sell us actually is!
